“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” – John Quincy Adams

When Do You Feel Impatient?

Impatience can strike at any time - whether it’s with a family member who knows exactly how to push your buttons, a challenging co-worker, or the frustration of being stuck in traffic during your daily commute.  These situations can easily disturb our inner peace and hinder our ability to respond calmly.  But the good news is, there are ways to cultivate patience and maintain your composure.

How to Cultivate Patience in Everyday Life

There are several effective strategies to help you develop greater patience.  For example, meditation and deep breathing exercises can help you stay grounded in the present moment, calming the mind and reducing impulsive reactions.  Instead of viewing waiting time as a burden, try reframing it as an opportunity to practice gratitude, reflect, or plan your day.  When impatience arises, practice self-compassion skills by being kind to yourself and understanding that it’s normal to feel this way sometimes.

Engaging in stress-reducing self-care activities like yoga, progressive relaxation, or EFT Tapping, can also help manage impatience.  Additionally, activities like gardening, fishing, or solving puzzles naturally build patience and strengthen your ability to wait.  If you’re feeling impatient about your progress toward a goal, consider breaking that goal into smaller, more manageable steps that can be achieved more quickly.

Practical Tips for Handling Impatience in Common Situations

  1. Waiting in Line
  • Bring a Distraction: Carry a book, listen to a podcast, or play a mobile game to make the wait more enjoyable.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Use the time to practice deep breathing or mindfulness, focusing on being present.
  1. Traffic Jams
  • Listen to Audiobooks or Podcasts: Turn your commute into a learning opportunity.
  • Plan Ahead: Leave earlier to reduce stress about being late and accept that traffic is a part of driving.
  1. Customer Service Delays
  • Multi-task: Use speakerphone mode so you can do other tasks while waiting.
  • Prepare Information: Have all relevant information ready before calling to streamline the process.
  1. Slow Internet or Technology Issues
  • Take a Break: Use the downtime to step away from the screen, stretch, or grab a drink.
  • Optimize Your Device: Regularly clear cache and update software to minimize issues.
  1. Learning a New Skill
  • Set Small, Achievable Goals: Break down the learning process into manageable steps.
  • Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge small victories to stay motivated.
  1. Medical Appointments
  • Bring Entertainment: Bring something to read or listen to while waiting.
  • Prepare Questions: Use the waiting time to jot down any questions for the doctor.
  1. Relationship or Communication Delays
  • Understand Different Perspectives: Recognize that others may have different communication styles or priorities.
  • Set Boundaries and Expectations: Clearly communicate your needs and agree on reasonable response times.
  1. Job-Related Situations
  • Focus on What You Can Control: While waiting for feedback, direct your energy toward other productive tasks.
  • Network and Build Skills: Use waiting periods to enhance your skills or expand your professional network.
  1. Travel Delays
  • Have a Backup Plan: Keep a book, movie, or work with you for unexpected delays.
  • Stay Updated: Use apps to stay informed about delays and find alternative routes.
  1. Online Shopping and Deliveries
  • Track Orders: Use tracking tools to stay updated on delivery times.
