Design Your Year Part 2: New Year Preview

clarity goals Dec 08, 2024

"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible." – Tony Robbins

Welcome back to Part 2 of my Design Your Year series! In this four-part framework we’re focusing on intentionally creating your best year yet.

In Part 1, we reviewed and reflected on the past 12 months.  If you haven’t completed that step, I encourage you to start there – it’s a powerful way to gain clarity and learn from your experiences.  Reflection lays the groundwork for meaningful goal setting.

Now, let’s shift our focus forward. In this part, we’ll explore how to identify what you truly want to achieve in the next 12 months and set clear, purposeful goals.

Revisit Your Values and Priorities

Your values are like a compass, guiding you toward a life that feels authentic and fulfilling. To align your goals with what truly matters, take some time to reflect on these key questions:

  • What matters most to me?
  • What do I want my life to stand for?
  • Which areas of my life need the most attention?

When your goals reflect your core values, they’re more likely to energize and inspire you throughout the year.

Visualize Your Ideal Life

Imagine it’s one year from now, and you’re living your dream life.  Close your eyes and picture the details:

  • What are you doing?
  • How do you feel?
  • Who is with you?

Write down what you see and feel.  This vision can help you identify the goals that resonate most deeply with you.

Divide Your Life into Categories

To make goal setting manageable, break your life into categories such as career, family, finances, etc.

Choose 1–2 goals for the areas that matter most to you.  This focused approach keeps you from feeling overwhelmed while ensuring your goals are meaningful.

Journal Prompts to Spark Ideas

If you’re unsure where to start, journaling can help uncover what you truly want. Try these prompts

  • What do I want to feel more of in the new year?
  • What’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet?
  • What’s one area of my life I’d like to improve?
